| "Porky"
was born Eugene Lee on October 25, 1933, in Fort Worth, Texas, the
adopted son of Rowland Lee and Eva Grey Lee.
It was Eugene's
mother who sent a photograph of him to the Hal Roach Studios, where
Mr. Roach was struck by Eugene's resemblance to George "Spanky"
McFarland. Enough so that little 2-year-old Eugene was quickly
cast as Spanky's younger brother in the 1935 film "Little Sinner".
The Lee family soon relocated to southern California after that,
and the newest Our Gang member, "Porky", appeared in 28
of the next 29 Hal Roach Our Gang shorts, missing only the 1936
"Arbor Day". Porky appeared in 42 Our Gang films
from 1935 to 1939. On Porky's sixth Our Gang film, director
Gordon Douglas arrived to work on the Hal Roach lot. He had
a rapport with the Gang, particularly with Porky, which led the
Lee family to change Eugene's stage name to "Gordon" –
the name he still uses to this day.
It's hard to
imagine Porky out-growing his role but that's exactly what happened
all too soon, and his last appearance with the Gang came in 1939
(Gordon grew to a full 6 feet 4 by adulthood). He moved back to
Texas with his parents and graduated from Lubbock Senior High School,
majored in Political Science and History at Texas Tech, and later
received his Bachelor's degree from the University of Houston.
Gordon enjoyed a 27-year teaching career and moved from Texas to
Denver. In 1958 he married a fellow student and had a son,
Douglas Stewart Gregory Lee. He was divorced in 1971.
Later, he was married to a fellow teacher for ten years and enjoyed
his four grandchildren and one great-grandson. Gordon has
always had a passion for auto racing, which he will be sharing with
you online; one of his favorite hobbies included restoring antique
autos—he actually spent a year working with the famous Carroll
Shelby.
Gordon managed
to stay out of the spotlight for many years, until 1980, when he
began making personal appearances as a former Our Gang member.
He has been a successful man, happy with his friends and at peace
with his life. Nowdays, we can catch him around southern California
where he recently relocated from the mid-west. He has made
personal appearances at conventions and film shows, and has done
several television interviews of late. Always witty and outspoken,
this tall and engaging man is incredibly good company!
"If
there is one thread that weaves its way through all 221 Our
Gang shorts, it is the innocence of childhood, and nowhere
was that beguiling naiveté more evident than in the
cherubic face of "Porky". -– Steven K. Brown
